Vincent vytvořil dvě slavná díla slunečnic. Toto je první z doby jeho pobytu v Arles (Francie), obsahem váza s dvanácti slunečnicemi. Vznik se datuje do roku 1888. Originál byl v umístěn v Neue Pinakothek Museum v Mnichově.
